Limited Mantle Hydration by Bending Faults at the Middle America Trench

چکیده

Seismic anisotropy measurements show that upper mantle hydration at the Middle America Trench (MAT) is limited to serpentinization and/or water in fault zones, rather than distributed uniformly. Subduction of hydrated oceanic lithosphere recycles back into deep mantle, drives arc volcanism, and affects seismicity subduction zones. Constraining extent an important part understanding many fundamental processes on Earth. Substantially reduced seismic velocities tomography suggest outer rise plate-bending faults provide a pathway for seawater rehydrate slab just prior subduction. Estimates outer-rise based tomograms vary significantly, with some large enough imply that, globally, has consumed more two oceans worth during Phanerozoic. We found while mean wavespeed MAT rise, amplitude orientation inherited are preserved depths >1 km below Moho. At shallower depths, relict replaced by slowing fault-normal direction. These observations incompatible pervasive but consistent models wave propagation through serpentinized zones thin <100-m width Confining reduces storage estimates from ?3.5 wt% <0.9 H20. Since intermediate thermal structure ?24 Myr-old favors serpentinization, suggests mechanics limiting factor, not temperatures. Subducting may be similarly dry globally.

Redefinition of the Terminus of the Middle America Trench

The terminus of the Middle America Trench has been traditionally represented as an arc, concave towards the continent. Tres Marías Islands are located at the terminus of the Middle America Trench in western Mexico, and their location is not only intriguing but also a key to the re-construction of the position of Baja California peninsula before separation from the North America plate. Previous ...

Mantle convection in the Middle East: Reconciling Afar upwelling, Arabia indentation and Aegean trench rollback

The Middle East region represents a key site within the Tethyan domain where continental break-up, collision, backarc extension and escape tectonics are kinematically linked together. We perform global mantle circulation computations to test the role of slab pull and mantle upwellings as driving forces for the kinematics of the Arabia–Anatolia–Aegean (AAA) system, evaluating different boundary ...

Fluid flow paths in the Middle America Trench and Costa Rica margin

The hydrology of the subducting plate and its dewatering behavior through the shallow subduction zone is linked to the structure and deformation of the forearc prism, the nature of the seismogenic zone, the composition of seawater for selected elements, and the composition of the residual slab subducted to depths of magma generation at the volcanic arc. Two locally independent systems of fluid ...

Efficient Methods for Exploiting Faults Induced at AES Middle Rounds

Faults occurred during the operations in a hardware device cause many problems such as performance deterioration, unreliable output, etc. If a fault occurs in a cryptographic hardware device, the effect can be even serious because an adversary may exploit it to find the secret information stored in the device. More precisely, the adversary can find the key of a block cipher using differential i...
